You see, for solar panels, efficiency is defined as the amount of electricity output for the amount of light input.

A kW of solar panels, be they high efficiency or low efficiency, will receive different amounts of sunlight incident on them, because the low efficiency solar panels will have a higher area for the same wattage than the area for low efficiency panels.

Thus, the formula is simple – high efficiency panels will generate the same amount of electricity as low efficiency panels of same wattage, but will require a much lower area for the same.
