Chennai-based mechanical seals manufacturer achieves reasonable savings by adopting solar thermal-based solutions to meet heating requirements. 

Solar Mango recently visited a solar installation in Chennai. Unlike Solar Mango’s usual site visits which focused on solar PV, this was a solar thermal installation.

The site was the manufacturing unit of Avon Seals Pvt Ltd, a manufacturer of mechanical seals for domestic and agricultural pumps in India, at Ambattur Industrial Estate, Chennai. Tamil Nadu has been witnessing promising growth rates for rooftop solar in India. This is validated by the fact that Tamil Nadu has close to a 100 MW of rooftop solar installations.

In a move to go green, TajSATS, an in-flight catering company, recently installed a solar power plant at its catering facility rooftop in Chennai.

TajSATS Chennai consumes a high amount of electricity for its cooking operations, water heating, refrigeration as well as storage requirements. The 203 kWp solar plant they installed in October 2016 is expected to contribute 10-15% of the total electricity consumption.

Although module manufacturing capacity in India has increased from less than 60 MW in 2005 to more than 4 GW in 2016, the existence of many module makers have been under threat due to stiff competition from Chinese module suppliers who have been dumping cheap panels in India. While the Chinese imports have helped with the growth of solar installed capacity in India, it has taken a toll on domestic solar manufacturing.
